Bottle / Bud Vases, wood and soda fired

Bottle / Bud Vases, wood and soda fired

from $98.00

One-of-a-kind, wheel-thrown stoneware bottles, lined with water-tight glazes and fired in atmospheric kilns. During atmospheric firings the air, and components introduced to the air, impacts the surface finish of each piece.

During a wood firing, the live flame is fueled by wood and the ash creates surface effects on the pieces in the kiln. The grey vase in this listing was thrown with a white stoneware, lined with a gloss clear glaze, left unglazed on the exterior, and fired on its side. The finish on the exterior of the piece is a result of the ash and heat in the kiln.

During the soda firing that the orange/red/brown bottles were in, the live flame was fueled by gas and soda ash was introduced into the firing so that it would vaporize and create glaze effects on the vessels in the kiln. The listed bottles were thrown with a warm-brown stoneware and dipped in a white slip. They have a tenmoku liner glaze and were left unglazed on the exterior. The shiner bottle encountered more vaporized soda ash during the firing.
